“Style Wars” – Hip Hop & Graffiti Doku komplett online

Style Wars gilt als eine der besten Grafitti und Hip Hop Dokus aller Zeiten und ist seit kurzem offiziell auf Youtube in voller Länge in zahlreiche Kapitel unterteilt zu sehen. Zu sehen sind unter Anderem Interviews mit Fab 5 Freddy, Goldie, Guru, DJ Red Alert und der legendären Street-Art Fotografin Martha Cooper anfang der 80er Jahre.

STYLE WARS captured the look and feel of New York’s ramshackle subway system as graffiti writers’ public playground, battleground and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them by every means possible were Mayor Edward Koch, the police, and the New York Transit Authority. Meanwhile MCs, DJs and B-boys rocked the city with new sounds and new moves and street corner breakdance battles evolved into performance art.

New York’s legendary kings of graffiti and b-boys own a special place in the hip Hop pantheon. STYLE WARS has become an emblem of the original, embracing spirit of hip hop as it reached out across the world from underground tunnels, uptown streets, clubs and playgrounds.

Weiterhin bitten die Macher von Style Wars derzeit um Spenden da die Original-Filmrollen wohl beschädigt sind und nur mittels digitaler Technik gerettet werden können, was im gleichen Atemzug auch eine Digitally Remastered Version hervorbringen würde.

Getreu dem Filmtitel “Weiße Jungs bringens nicht” erscheinen beinahe täglich auf White People Rapping Poorly, nun ja, extreme schlechte Rap Darbietungen von irgendwelchen Selbstdarstellern, wodurch einem erst einmal klar wird, was für Ausnahmen Leute wie Mike Skinner oder Eminem sind. Ich hab ja die letzten zwei Wochen bei Herrn Winkelsen die Urlaubsvertretung übernommen, seitdem renne ich wieder mit ziemlich viel Hip Hop im Ohr rum. Eklips hier, mehrfacher französischer Beatbox Champion, hat die Beats nicht nur im Ohr sondern auch auf der Zunge und beatboxed sich mal fröhlich in vier Minuten durch die Geschichte des Hip Hops. Ich konnte es mir bis jetzt noch nicht ansehen, aber allein die Beschreibung zur Doku “Scratch” aus dem Jahr 2001 reicht mir um sie zu empfehlen. Denn mehr als alle anderen waren es vor allem Hip-Hop DJs, die die Grenzen der Auflegerei ausgelotet und gebrochen haben. Menschen wie Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa oder auch DJ Q-Bert gingen an die Grenzen dessen gehen was ein normaler Plattenspieler aushält und eine feiernde Meute sehen und hören will. Darum heute ein Tribute an den Hip-Hop DJ.
