Das man so ziemlich jeden Datensalat in ein Audio-Tool werfen kann wusste ich ja schon, das das mitunter sogar nach “richtiger” Musik klingt hätte ich nicht gedacht. Hier zum Beispiel der Klang des Electro-Rave Monster MS Paint.exe in Audacity bei 22kHz und 8-Bit Sample-Rate. Sollte auch mit jedem anderen Audio-Tool funktionieren das sich mit PCM-Daten versteht, falls ihr es mal selber ausprobieren wollt. via brainbar

Immaterials: Light Painting WiFi

Falls ihr wie ich schon immer mal wissen wolltet sich ein Wifi-Signal ausbreitet, dann schaut auf mal das neue Projekt Light Painting WiFi von Timo Arnall, Jørn Knutsen und Einar Sneve Martinussen für YOUrban an, die mit einem 4m langen und LED-bestückten Stab und der Hilfe von Langzeitbelichtung durch die Innenstadt von Oslo gewandert sind und WiFi-Signale punktgenau sichtbar gemacht haben.

In order to study the spatial and material qualities of wireless networks, we built a WiFi measuring rod that visualises WiFi signal strength as a bar of lights. When moved through space the rod displays changes in the WiFi signal. Long-exposure photographs of the moving rod reveal cross sections of a network’s signal strength.

The measuring rod is inspired by the poles land surveyors use to map and describe the physical landscape. Similarly, our equipment allows us to reveal and represent topographies of wireless networks. The measuring rod uses a typical mobile WiFi antenna to measure reception, and draw out 4 metre tall graphs of light.

“Phantom of the Floppera” – A Floppy Drive Organ plays Toccata & Fuge

Ich bin da noch nicht ganz durchgestiegen wie der Kerl das macht, aber Youtuber FunToTheHead hat sich eine Orgel aus vier alten Diskettenlaufwerken und irgendeinem Microcontroller gebaut auf der er Bachs Toccata & Fuge in einer LoFi Diskhack Version spielt.

Features two 3 1/2″ drives and two 5 1/4″ drives connected to a PIC18f14k50 microcontroller. It interfaces to any MIDI source via MIDI over USB. Straight MIDI would also be possible with an additional small circuit and some minor firmware changes. This initial version can respond to all 128 MIDI notes, and pitch bends +/- 2 semitones.

As it can produce only four simultaneous notes, and each drive has a different range and tonal characteristics, best results are obtained by arranging compositions by hand. However, it features two modes of operation: in one mode, MIDI channels 1 through 4 are played directly on floppy drives 1 through 4. In the other mode, all 16 MIDI channels are read, and notes are “intelligently” divvied out on a first-come, first-serve basis. “Note stealing” ensures that melody lines sound, but chords are often cut short. One or the other produces acceptable results for many unmodified MIDI files straight out of your favorite media player.

Badass LEGO Technic Guns

LEGO ist und bleibt, von K’NEX mal abgesehen, das wohl beste Kreativitätsfördernde Spielzeug was man Kids in die Hände geben kann. Was man allerdings bis zu einem bestimmten Alter vermeiden sollte, wäre ihnen dieses Buch* zu schenken in dem sich die Bauanleitungen für fünf ziemliche übele Lego Knarren finden. Cyberneticzoo – A History of Cybernetic Animals and early Robots

Bin eben dank Clockworker Captain Serenus auf den Blog Cyberneticzoo von Reuben Hoggett gestoßen, der sich ausschließlich mit Animatronics, früher Robotertechnik und anderen Maschinen beschäftigt.

Reuben Hoggett has had a life-long interest in robots. His earliest images are that of Grey Walter’s tortoise as illustrated in Nigel Calder’s book ‘Robots’, an image of Bruce Lacey’s robot best ‘man’  Rosabosom in a 60′s newspaper article, and Dr Who and the Daleks, of course. These books and articles he still has after 40 odd years. Over that time his personal collection of all things robotic has been growing.  Aspects of his robotics interest were re-kindled some years ago after reading an article on the recent discovery and restoration of Grey Walter’s own tortoise by those at Bristol Robotics Lab. After starting a friendship with robot builder and historian David Buckley, some of his efforts have been published on David’s site.  With the amount of material he has on the early history of robots, there is at least 2 years of work effort if each robot gets its own blog entry each night.

Beim ersten überfliegen bin ich auch schon auf obiges Motiv eines frühen Power-Skelett mit dem kernigen Namen “GE Handyman” gestoßen, welches anfang der 50er Jahre der Fachwelt vergestellt wurde. Toller Blog, der umgehend in den Feedreader kommt. via clockworker

Nothing But Scratch Minimalized Turntable

Extrem minimalistischer Turntable von Designer R.D. Silva, der funktioniert, allerdings auf Pitch und 33⅓ / 45 BPM Schalter verzichet hat.

Take a peek at this record player. It’s the kind that plays vinyl records, the 12″ kind, and it does it well with only the bare minimum. Fantastical! It’s called “Turnstyle” and it’s made up of the motor, the needle, the speakers, and the controls. What more do you need? It’s a skeleton of its former self, and not former as in it was stripped, former as in there’s no reason to ever go back to more!

This project is designed by RD Silver, a designer who has the guts to take away everything but the guts. The requirements for function set upon this project were the following: spin record, on/off, volume, speaker, and needle. As far as design requirements: no corners, no hard edges, no 90 degree angles.
