BBC-Dokumentation: The Virtual Revolution

Irgendjemand war so gut alle vier Episoden der BBC Dokumentation “The Virtual Revolution” über die Entwicklung des Internets, des ganzen Social Media Gedöns, Twitter und Co. ins Netz zu stellen. Das ganze Konzept hierzu, angefangen vom Titel der Serie bis zum Inhalt der einzelnen Episoden, entstand im übrigen auf diesem Blog. Und da das alles so furchtbar toll ist habe ich hier noch einen Snip aus dem Wikipedia-Artikel und im Anschluss nach dem Klick, alle Episoden als Video eingebettet.

The Virtual Revolution is a British television documentary series presented by Aleks Krotoski, which began airing on BBC Two on 30 January 2010. A co-production between the BBC and the Open University, the series looks at the impact the World Wide Web has had since its inception 20 years ago. The series took on a different approach to BBC documentary making by encouraging an open and collaborative production.

Mein Dank und Gruß schwirrt jetzt über die Meta-Ebene an René, der den Trailer zu dieser Doku vor einer gefühlten Ewigkeit auf nerdcore hatte und mich gerade dazu inspirierte der ganzen Sache mal nach zu gehen.

The Virtual Revolution Episode 1: Explores the origins, history and impact of the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW). From its Cold-War military origins in the 1950;s, through its evolution as a meeting place of the 1960s hippy/libertarian movement, to its modern-day incarnation through the genius of Tim Berners-Lee and other like minded pioneers. The Internet/WWW is seen as powering the 2nd Industrial Revolution; its impact on humanity as profound as Guttenbergs Printing Press, or the power of Steam to the original Industrial Revolution. The Virtual Revolution Episode 2: Twenty years on from the invention of the World Wide Web, Dr Aleks Krotoski looks at how it is reshaping almost every aspect of our lives. Joined by some of the web’s biggest names – including the founders of Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft, and the web’s inventor – she explores how far the web has lived up to its early promise. Here, Aleks charts how the Web is forging a new brand of politics, both in democracies and authoritarian regimes. With contributions from Al Gore, Martha Lane Fox, Stephen Fry and Bill Gates, Aleks explores how interactive, unmediated sites like Twitter and YouTube have encouraged direct action and politicised young people in unprecedented numbers. Yet, at the same time, the Web’s openness enables hardline states to spy and censor, and extremists to threaten with networks of hate and crippling cyber attacks. (Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

The Virtual Revolution Episode 3: Destroys the myth of free internet services such as Google, Ebay, web-mail etc. Illustrates how commerce has come to dominate virtually all aspects of web provision, allied to their increasingly sophisticated tactics to gather data/information on all web-users. This data is then used to target us with advertising catered to our tastes / browsing habits. However, this data-trawling comes with a price, the surrender of our privacy. (Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

The Virtual Revolution Episode 4: ‘Homointerneticus’ is the web changing the way we act / behave / interact with our fellow human beings? What long term effects is the web having on our children – are children today unable to tell the difference between the ‘Virtual’ world and the ‘Real’ world? The final episode in this series explores all of these issues and offers a glimpse into what the future might hold for all of us as a consequence of this ‘Virtual Revolution’.
